O ver a seven month period, from Novenber 2010 to June 2011, three teams of volunteers from Christ Church of Oak Brook* traveled to the Bethel World Outreach Center of Brentwood, TN, just south of Nashville. Bethel was hosting a temporary operation by Samaritan's Purse, which was engaged in rebuilding homes damaged by the devastating floods there in May 2010. These team members were joined by other volunteers from around the country for a week of work and fellowship under the supervision of Samaritan's Purse staff members. Bethel provided a bunkhouse that accommodated 30 (20 men and 10 women). Also available was a house that had been converted into a dining/assembly hall and the use of a well-equipped kitchen in the church. SP brought in a shower trailer with six shower stalls. ![]() ![]() ![]() Volunteers were responsible for their own transportation to the Brentwood site and for their own meals until Monday morning. They were also responsible for providing their own bedding, towels and toilet articles. SP provided everything else, including all tools needed at the work sites. Every morning, lights went on in the bunkhouse at 6 am. Breakfast was at 7 and, except on departure day Saturday, it was a hot meal with fare fit for laborers...including those old southern standbys, biscuits and gravy and, of course, grits. After breakfast every morning, there was a time for devotions. The first day, they were conducted by the SP leader. Volunteers were responsible on the next four mornings. Materials to make bag lunches were available in the dining hall. After an orientation period that first morning, the volunteers were divided into teams with an SP staff supervisor for each team. All of the volunteers have been impressed with the way in which this most challenging operation has been carried on by Samaritan's Purse staff.
